About Online compass

Hold your phone flat and the compass shows your heading in degrees from 0 to 359 along with the direction, such as NE or SW. It reads the phone's magnetometer, so keep it away from magnets, metal cases and car dashboards, which pull the needle off.

How to use Online compass

  1. Open the page on your phone and allow access to its motion and direction sensors.
  2. Hold the phone flat and away from metal objects.
  3. Read the degrees and the cardinal direction shown as you turn.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the compass not working on my computer?

Most laptops and desktops have no magnetometer, so there is nothing to read. Open the page on a phone or tablet and allow motion and orientation access when asked.

Why does my compass point the wrong way?

Magnets, metal and electronics nearby disturb the sensor. Move away from them and wave the phone in a figure-eight to recalibrate, then hold it flat again.

What do the degrees mean?

Zero degrees is north, 90 is east, 180 is south and 270 is west. The reading shows which way the top of your phone points, and it may be magnetic north rather than true north.
