Frequently asked questions

How do I find the relative minor of a key?

It is the sixth note of the major scale, three semitones below the major tonic. C major's relative minor is A minor, and both share the same key signature.

What does moving clockwise around the circle mean?

Each step clockwise goes up a perfect fifth and adds one sharp to the key signature. Counter-clockwise goes down a fifth and adds one flat.

How can the circle help me modulate to another key?

Keys next to each other on the circle share most of their notes, so they sound smooth together. Moving to a neighbouring key is the easiest change to make.
