Will removing silence cut off the ends of words?
It can if the threshold is too high. Lower the silence level and keep a short pause so soft word endings are preserved.
What silence setting should I start with?
Start with the default and listen to the result. If words are clipped, make the threshold less sensitive. If pauses remain, make it more sensitive.
Why shorten pauses instead of removing them completely?
Keeping a short pause makes speech sound natural. Removing every gap makes the speaker sound rushed and breathless, so a brief pause is usually the better choice.
