About Histogram and auto levels

A histogram plots how many pixels sit at each brightness level, from black on the left to white on the right. A pile at one end means a dark or washed-out photo. Auto levels stretches each channel to fill the range, removing dullness and colour casts.

How to use Histogram and auto levels

  1. Add a photo to see its histogram drawn below or beside it.
  2. Look at where the graph sits: bunched left is dark, bunched right is bright.
  3. Apply auto levels and compare before and after, then save the corrected photo.

Frequently asked questions

What does a good histogram look like?

There is no single ideal shape, but a photo usually looks richest when the data reaches both ends without being cut off. Bars crushed against the edges mean lost shadow or highlight detail.

What does auto levels actually change in my photo?

It stretches the tones so the darkest pixels become close to black and the brightest close to white. This adds contrast to flat pictures and can also reduce a colour tint when applied per channel.

Why can auto levels make some photos look worse?

If a photo is meant to be dark or foggy, stretching the tones removes that mood. Auto levels also cannot add detail that was never captured, so check the preview and skip it when the original already looks right.
