About Ear training

Practice hearing the distance between two notes (intervals) and the quality of chords, then see your score. Recognising a perfect fifth or a minor third by ear helps with playing by ear, transcribing songs and singing in tune. Short daily sessions build the skill faster than one long session.

How to use Ear training

  1. Choose whether to practise intervals or chords.
  2. Listen to the sound and pick the answer you think is right.
  3. Check your score and repeat to improve.

Frequently asked questions

Can ear training give me perfect pitch?

Mostly not in adults. Relative pitch, naming intervals and chords, can be learned well with practice and is more useful for most musicians.

What is the easiest way to remember intervals?

Link each interval to the start of a song you know, for example a perfect fifth to the opening of a familiar theme. Practise a few intervals first before adding more.

How often should I practise ear training?

Short daily sessions of 5 to 10 minutes usually work better than a long weekly one. Start with a few options and add harder ones once your score is steady.
