About DNA tools
Paste a DNA sequence to get its complement, reverse complement, RNA transcript, protein translation or base counts. The reverse complement is what the opposite strand reads 5' to 3', which matters for primer design. Translation uses the standard codon table, starting from the first base.
How to use DNA tools
- Paste or type your DNA sequence using A, T, C and G.
- Choose an action: complement, reverse complement, transcribe, translate or count bases.
- Copy the resulting sequence or read the base counts.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between complement and reverse complement?
The complement swaps A with T and C with G in place. The reverse complement also reverses the order, giving the opposite strand read in the 5' to 3' direction.
Which strand do I paste for transcription?
RNA is made as a copy of the template strand, so what you get depends on which strand you paste. Check whether your sequence is the coding strand or the template strand before you rely on the output.
Where does translation start in my sequence?
Reading is done in codons of three bases, so the starting position matters. If the protein looks wrong, trim your sequence to begin at the ATG start codon and try again.
