About Dilution calculator
Based on C1 x V1 = C2 x V2, this tool finds the volume of stock solution needed to prepare a weaker solution. It then gives the amount of diluent to add, since the stock volume is part of the final volume. Common in labs, cleaning products and hydroponics.
How to use Dilution calculator
- Enter the concentration of your stock solution.
- Enter the concentration and the final volume you want.
- Read how much stock to take and how much diluent to add.

Frequently asked questions
Do I add the diluent volume to the stock volume?
The final volume V2 includes the stock. If you need 100 mL and the stock needed is 20 mL, add 80 mL of diluent, not 100 mL.
Can I use any concentration unit with C1V1 = C2V2?
Yes, as long as C1 and C2 use the same unit, and V1 and V2 use the same unit. Only the ratio matters, so molar, percent or mg/mL all work if you stay consistent.
How do I plan a serial dilution?
Work one step at a time, using the diluted result of the first step as the stock for the next. Keep each step to a modest ratio, since small pipetting errors grow when you dilute a lot at once.
Is Dilution calculator free?
Yes. Dilution calculator on Toolipedia is free to use, with no sign-up and no watermark.
