About Significant figures calculator

Rounds a number to the significant figures you choose and counts how many a number already has. Leading zeros never count, trapped zeros always do, and trailing zeros count only after a decimal point. So 0.00450 has three, while 4500 may have just two.

How to use Significant figures calculator

  1. Type the number you want to work with.
  2. Enter how many significant figures to round to.
  3. Read the rounded value and the count of significant figures in the original.

Frequently asked questions

How many significant figures are in 0.0120?

Three: the 1, the 2 and the trailing 0 after the decimal point. The zeros before the 1 only mark the decimal place and do not count.

Are trailing zeros significant?

After a decimal point, yes: 2.50 has three significant figures. In a whole number like 1500 they are ambiguous unless marked, so scientific notation is clearer.

How do I round in a multi-step calculation?

Keep extra digits during the steps and round only the final answer to the least precise measurement. Rounding at every step builds up error.
