How do I find the price before tax?
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal. A total of 110 with 10 percent tax gives 100 before tax.
Why can't I just subtract the tax percent from a tax-inclusive price?
Tax was added on top of the base, so divide by 1 plus the rate. For 120 with 20% tax, the base is 120 divided by 1.2, which is 100.
