What is the difference between HMAC and a plain hash?
An HMAC mixes in a secret key, so only someone with the key can produce or verify it. A plain hash can be computed by anyone.
Why does my HMAC not match the one from an API?
Check that the message is byte for byte identical, the key is the same and the output encoding matches. Hidden whitespace is a common cause.
Should I put a real production secret here?
Prefer a test key. The calculation runs in your browser, but production secrets are best kept out of any tool you do not fully control.
