About Internet speed converter

Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), but downloads show megabytes per second (MB/s). Divide Mbps by 8 for the maximum MB/s. A 100 Mbps line therefore gives about 12.5 MB/s at best. This converter handles every other rate unit too.

How to use Internet speed converter

  1. Enter a speed such as 100 and select Mbps.
  2. Choose MB/s or another transfer rate as the target.
  3. Read the converted speed to estimate real download times.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my download slower than my Mbps plan?

Plans use bits and downloads show bytes, and 8 bits make a byte. Add Wi-Fi, server limits and overhead, and real speeds are lower.

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps counts megabits per second, while MB/s counts megabytes. One byte has eight bits, so 100 Mbps is at most about 12.5 MB/s of file download.

How long will a download take at my speed?

Convert your speed to MB/s, then divide the file size in MB by it. Real downloads are slower than that, because of network overhead and server limits.
