About Compare two lists

Paste two lists and see what appears only in A, only in B and in both, like a quick VLOOKUP without formulas. Typical uses are checking mailing lists, comparing product codes or spotting missing IDs between spreadsheets. Hidden trailing spaces and capital letters are a common cause of false mismatches.

How to use Compare two lists

  1. Paste the first list into box A, one item per line.
  2. Paste the second list into box B.
  3. Read the items only in A, only in B, and in both.

Frequently asked questions

Why do matching items show as different?

Usually invisible spaces or different capitalization. Turn on trimming or ignoring case so that Apple and apple count as the same.

Does the comparison ignore capital letters?

Check the options on the page for a case setting. If items still look different, trim extra spaces and match the capitalization, since Apple and apple are different text.

How do I use this instead of VLOOKUP?

Copy one column from each spreadsheet into the two boxes. The 'in both' result is the match list, and the 'only in' lists show what is missing from either side.
