Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or more obese.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not always. Muscle weighs more than fat, so a very muscular person can have a high BMI without extra body fat. Waist measurements and body fat percentage give a fuller picture.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The tool does this for you after you enter your numbers in metric or imperial units.
Should children use the same BMI categories?
No. Children and teenagers are compared with growth charts for their age and sex. Ask a doctor or nurse to interpret BMI for anyone under 18.
Is BMI calculator free?
Yes. BMI calculator on Toolipedia is free to use, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Is it safe to use?
Yes. Everything is worked out in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to our server.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern browser on Android and iPhone, as well as on tablets and computers. There's nothing to install.
Do I need an account?
